The Aorta is the main artery that travels through the abdomen from your heart. This scan is done to look for aortic dilatation and the detection of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The scan can also assess for narrowing of your Aorta by calcification, plaque or thrombus build up. It will also look for any peripheral arterial aneurysm.
The duplex scans of the main arteries of your legs looks to ensure there is adequate blood circulation through your arteries. It looks for the build up of plaques or thickening of your arterial wall. It allows for decisions to be made on whether you need medical or surgical (such as an angioplasty) management of any blockages to your arteries. If you did have a blockage in your arteries in your legs, you may find you get tightening in your calf when you walk for variable distances.
