What is the menopause?
The menopause refers to a time in a woman’s life when menstruation ceases and the ovaries stop releasing eggs permanantly.
Women are likely to experience menopause at any time between the ages of 40 and 58 (the average age is 51). It is considered complete when you have been without a period for a full year (over the age of 50) or been without a period for a full 2 years (under the age of 50).
What are the symptoms of the menopause?
There are multiple symptoms that can occur, but they vary from one person to the other.
Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog and mood swings. Others include irritability, vaginal dryness and a loss of libido to only name a few.
How do you diagnose the menopause?
Often no tests are needed. A consultation with our menopause clinic Wimbledon GP will suffice to make a diagnosis of you going through the menopause based on your symptoms and age. However, there will be instances where the diagnosis is not clear cut and blood hormone tests will need to be performed by our GP to diagnose if you are indeed going through the menopause. Sometimes bloods are needed to assess oestrogen levels as an aid to your therapy management plan.
Management options –
There are many management options available to help you with your symptoms. These will be tailored to your needs after discussion with your GP. Management options include complementary therapies and HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Your GP will go through all the pros and cons of each option and you will make a jointly informed decision on how best to proceed.
